IHRF Scientific Advisor Publishes New IH Research in Journal of Pediatric Neurology's Pediatric IH Issue

September 2015—IHRF Scientific Advisor Conrad Johanson, Ph.D.,whose areas of interest include the choroid plexus (the site in the brain where CSF is produced), and the development of more effective drugs to treat IH, has co-authored new research published in the latest issue of Journal of Pediatric Neurology. This issue also marks the first time an issue of the Journal has been exclusively devoted to pediatric intracranial hypertension research.

One of Dr. Johanson’s studies investigates the role of stimulated sodium transport, increased CSF formation and ICP. According to the study’s abstract, “[e]lucidating the common pathophysiologic transport mechanisms of [IH] in children and adults should help identify novel drugs, with fewer side effects than acetazolamide, to control more finely the CSF formation by choroid plexus. One possible avenue for future treatment of children and adults with IH is to pharmacologically manipulate the sodium and water movements across the choroid plexus secretory tissues that generate ICP.”

The other articles in the Journal address a variety of topics including diagnostic criteria for children, neuroendocrine issues, the role of sex hormones, ultrasound imaging for children, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and renal problems. Some of the study abstracts are available at the following links
